Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), the country’s largest exploration and production firm, has started oil production from an exploratory well in Sindh.
The company announced the development in a notice to the stock exchange on Tuesday.
“We are pleased to inform that OGDCL has successfully commenced oil production from its development well Pasakhi-13, marking a historic milestone as Pakistan’s first successful horizontal oil well in clastic reservoir (lower Goru – A sand),” read the notice.
According to the company, the Pasakhi-13 well is located in the Hyderabad district and is producing 460 barrels of oil per day (BPD).
The well was drilled to a measured depth of 2,966 meters, including a 546-meter horizontal section. Advanced geo-steering technology was used to precisely navigate within a narrow 3-meter drilling window, allowing accurate targeting of the most productive zone in the reservoir.
The company added that the well was completed and tested using a short-string Electric Submersible Pump (ESP), specifically optimized for horizontal well operations.
“Despite challenging reservoir characteristics, horizontal drilling enabled enhanced reservoir exposure, delivering nearly threefold higher production compared to offset wells under similar conditions,” it added.
Pasakhi-13 is part of the Pasakhi & Pasakhi North Development & Production Lease (D&PL), in which OGDCL holds a 100% working interest.
“The achievement reinforces OGDCL’s commitment to technical excellence, innovation, and deployment of advanced technologies in line with global standards, while advancing indigenous hydrocarbon production and strengthening Pakistan’s energy security,” said OGDCL.
OGDCL is Pakistan’s largest E&P company, engaged in exploration, drilling services, production, reservoir management, and engineering support.
It also holds the country’s largest exploration acreage, covering more than 40% of the total awarded area with significant oil and gas reserves.
The Government of Pakistan is the majority shareholder in OGDCL with over 67% ownership, followed by the OGDC Employee Empowerment Trust and the Privatisation Commission.
