Demand for electric vehicle (EV) scooters and bikes in Pakistan has surged בעקבות rising petrol prices, leading to shortages in the local market, it has been learned.
Dealers and industry experts told Business Recorder that buyers are paying “own money” ranging from Rs10,000 to Rs15,000 per unit, while delivery times have stretched to around 30 days. The delays are attributed to limited availability of completely knocked down (CKD) kits for popular models such as T5-L, Velax, and M3-H.
According to market estimates, approximately 40,000 EV units were sold in April alone, with scooters making up 90% of sales and bikes accounting for the remaining 10%. However, demand continues to outpace supply.
Evee Director Sales and Marketing Hamza Asad said assemblers have increased orders for CKD kits from China and expect supply to stabilize between May 25 and June 1.
He added that if favourable government policies persist, EV sales could reach 500,000 units by the end of December 2026.
The surge in demand follows a recent increase in petroleum prices by the government. Petrol prices rose by Rs6.51 per litre to Rs399.86, while high-speed diesel increased by Rs19.39 to Rs399.58 per litre.
Bike dealer and expert Muhammad Sabir Shaikh noted that many consumers prefer more “boyish” designs for EV scooters rather than “girlish” styles.
He suggested that EV scooters should feature “boyish” designs, including larger wheels of up to 14 inches, heavier builds, lithium iron phosphate batteries with at least 100km range, high-quality shock absorbers, and strong suspension systems.
Shaikh also urged policymakers to introduce a more supportive New Energy Vehicles (NEV) policy, proposing incentives such as allowing commercial battery imports for five years with 1% general sales tax (GST) and 1% customs duty, along with removing the requirement of setting up a paint shop to obtain an assembly licence.
He added that prices for popular EV scooters and bikes currently range between Rs250,000 and Rs600,000, while smaller bikes for children cost between Rs100,000 and Rs150,000 depending on quality and brand.
VLEKTRA founder and CEO Syed Raza Mohsin said the recent hike in fuel prices, combined with positive reception under the Pakistan Accelerated Vehicle Electrification (PAVE) programme, has caused short-term supply pressure.
“However, we feel supply is ramping up and will catch up in 2-3 months,” he said.
Mohsin added that suppliers are expanding capacity and emphasized the need for continued government support through favourable policies to sustain industry growth.
